World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer and is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.
Sevarat Healthcare and Nursing Pvt Ltd has been serving the older persons in Goa by providing healthcare services at home from 2016. As a part of their continuous efforts to serve the society and especially the ailing and lonely older persons , the Cancer Support Group was inaugurated this World Cancer day. Panjim CorporatorMr Surendra Furtado; Dr Eugene Rent – Surgical Oncologist; Dr Caeteana Moniz – Lymphedema Therapist; Dr Manish Singh- Physiotherapist and Mrs PrashantiTalpankar- Cancer Survivor were the invitees.
Mr Surendra Furtado, in his address spoke about the challenges of avoiding cancer causing factors like getting organic vegetables, fresh fish and living an active healthy life. Dr Eugene Rent expressed his satisfaction that now the cancer cure team is completed with the creation of the support group. He mentioned how vital it is for cancer patients to have the support and encouragement from other survivors. Mrs PrashantiTalpankar regaled the audience with her cancer story. Her story was full of humour and strength. She left the room inspired with her undying love for living happily while fighting cancer. Dr Moniz and Dr Singh also shared how physiotherapy is an important element of cancer treatment.
Rohini Gonsalves, the founder of Sevarat said “Sevarat has facilitated this Cancer Support Group in order to reach out to maximum number of families and individuals who have experienced Cancer in their lives. It aims to build a support structure not only for the cancer patients but also their families/carers. We wish to meet on the 4th of every month. This is a free for all group.
